Council Member Mike Martinez has devoted virtually his entire career to public service. As a continuation of his desire to serve the citizens of Austin, Mike resigned from a 13-year career with the Austin Fire Department to serve on the Austin City Council.
Mike became an Austin firefighter in 1993, serving as a Drill and Ceremony team member of the Austin Fire Department’s Honor Guard. A member of the Austin Firefighters Association since 1993, Mike has a long record of representing public safety professionals’ interests in elections and campaigns having served as the Chair of the Austin Firefighters Association Political Action Committee from 2001-2004. In 2003, Mike was elected to represent Austin firefighters as president of the Austin Firefighters Association where he led a successful public campaign to secure collective bargaining rights for Austin firefighters.
A graduate of Leadership Austin, as well as the LBJ School of Public Affairs West Point Military Leadership Program, Mike is a strong believer in community involvement. Mike has served on the Board of Directors of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Texas, as well as worked as a diversity trainer with the National Coalition Building Institute.
