Personal Information

Judge Robert Burns serves as the Presiding Judge of Criminal District Court No. 1, a felony criminal court in Dallas County. He also oversees a drug offender re-entry program and serves on the Dallas County Juvenile Board. He was first elected to the bench in 2006 and was reelected in 2010.

Before being elected, Judge Burns accumulated a broad range of experience in criminal law. As an attorney, he prosecuted and defended a wide variety of cases, from capital murder to DWI. Judge Burns served for six years in the Dallas County District Attorney's Office. He began in the misdemeanor trial section, prosecuting offenses ranging from theft and assault to DWI. After a promotion and prosecuting in the felony trial section, Judge Burns served in the public integrity section of the District Attorney's office. The majority of his experience was in the felony trial section, prosecuting cases before Dallas County juries on a daily and weekly basis.

When he left the District Attorney's office to begin private practice, Judge Burns was the deputy chief of the Organized Crime Division, prosecuting drug related homicide cases and drug dealers. In private practice, Judge Burns represented individuals charged with a wide variety of crimes.
