Roberto ‘Bobby’ Fernández was elected Mayor of Del Rio on June 19, 2010. A Del Rio native, Mayor Fernández has served his community for over 38 years bringing his vision of economic growth, and inter-governmental cooperation to his current title as Mayor to improve the quality of life for all City of Del Rio residents.

In 1973, at the age of 24, Fernández became the youngest elected city councilman in Del Rio history, and went on to serve the public as a city councilman until 1982. Throughout his tenure in public service, Mayor Fernández has placed an emphasis on one thing, moving Del Rio forward. This vision is evident in the community based organizations that he has chosen to be a part of for the past 38 years; United Civic Organization (UCO), Del Rio International Airport Commission, Middle Rio Grande Development Council, District Laughlin Air Force Base Advisory Council, Val Verde County Library Board, just to name a few.

This vision carried over into his professional life as well, with the San Felipe Del Rio Consolidated Independent School District (CISD). Mayor Fernández dedicated over 38 years of his professional life to the San Felipe Del Rio CISD, understanding the importance of education and the impact that it can have on a child’s life and community. Fernández went on to become the San Felipe Del Rio CISD, Superintendent of Schools in 2003 until he retired in 2008.

Mayor Fernández earned his undergraduate degree (B.A.) in Government/Political Science from The University of Texas at Austin in 1971 and his Master of Education (M.Ed.) degree in School Administration from Southwest Texas State University in 1974.

Mayor Fernández is married to Margot Fernández, who dedicated her career with the same vision of moving Del Rio forward, working as a High School Librarian in the San Felipe Del Rio CISD for 35 years, until she retired. They are the proud parents of Roberto, Jr. and Javier Fernández and three grandchildren.

Fernández has been dedicated to public service and giving back to his community for more than 38 years, this knowledge and leadership will be applied to his tenure as the Mayor, moving Del Rio forward.
