Texas Commissioner of Education Michael Williams announced that he will resign from his position effective Jan. 1.

Williams is a past commissioner and former chairman of the Railroad Commission of Texas, with more than 12 years of service to the state, and is the first African-American in Texas to hold an executive statewide elected post. He is past Assistant Secretary of Education for Civil Rights at the U.S. Department of Education (U.S. DOE) and past Deputy Assistant Secretary for Law Enforcement at the U.S. Department of Treasury under President George H.W. Bush. Additionally, Williams is a former adjunct professor at the Texas Southern University School of Public Affairs and Texas Wesleyan University School of Law.
