Merten is a project surveyor with Cobb, Fendley and Associates. He is a member of the Texas Society of Professional Surveyors, past president of the Gulf Coast Chapter of the Texas Society of Professional Surveyors, and past member of the Missouri and Illinois associations of Professional Land Surveyors. He is also a life member of the Texas Parent Teacher Association and a past volunteer coach for Bay Area Texas Baseball. Merten attended the University of Missouri at Rolla.
