Justice Bill Whitehill was elected to the Texas Fifth District Court of Appeals at Dallas in November 2014 and assumed office on January 1, 2015. Before joining the Court, was a trial and appellate lawyer with Gardere Wynne Sewell, L.L.P. for more than thirty-two years. He handled a wide variety of antitrust, arbitration (domestic and international), banking, business tort, class action, commercial, ERISA, intellectual property, hospitality, real estate development, probate, and trust cases. He joined the firm as an associate in 1982, was elected partner in 1989 and held that position until his 2014 retirement to join the Court.

Justice Whitehill graduated from the University of Texas at Austin in 1978 with a BBA in Finance. He obtained his JD cum laude from the Robert H. Dedman School of Law at Southern Methodist University in 1982 and was elected to the Order of the Coif. He served as Co-Editor Texas Survey Editor of the Southwestern Law Journal and was a member of Phi Delta Phi. He has served various bar organizations, including Chair of the Dallas Bar Association Antitrust Section and currently serves as Vice Chair of the State Bar of Texas Antitrust and Business Litigation Section. He is also a member of the Texas Bar Foundation. He has served on the boards of multiple charitable corporations and community boards such as the Coppell Park Board, the Coppell Recreational Development Board.
